What is Raksha Bandhan?

Raksha Bandhan or simply Rakhi is among the most popular Hindu festival which is celebrated across the world mainly by Indians.  This festival is dedicated to the sibling, for their love and affection.  I may be not wrong if I say that Raksha Bandhan is the only festival in the world which designed for brothers and sisters.

On this day, brother take an oath that he will protect his sister for rest of their life, sister ties a sacred thread (which is called Rakhi) on brother’s wrist and prays for his long life. Brother also gives some gift to his sister.

On this year (2018) Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Sunday 26th August. The beauty of the festival is that brothers traveled far to reach the place where his sister is residing and sister keep fast till tying rakhi on brothers wrist.

History of Raksha Bandhan

When is Raksha Bandhan started? There is no absolute answer to this question, some experts believe that it is started in the 19th century and some believe that it is a several-thousand-year-old tradition. The most popular reference is of King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi.

King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi Reference for Raksha Bandhan

According to Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana, after Vishnu won the three worlds from the demon King Bali, Bali asked Vishnu to stay with him in his palace, a request Vishnu granted. Vishnu’s wife, Goddess Lakshmi did not like the palace or his newfound friendship with Bali and preferred that her husband and she return to Vaikuntha. So she went to Bali, tied a rakhi and made him a brother to her. Bali asked her what gift she desired. Lakshmi asked that Vishnu is freed from the request that he lives in Bali’s palace. Bali consented, as well accepted her as his sister.

Happy Raksha Bandhan

Happy Raksha Bandhan

Happy Raksha Bandhan

Happy Raksha Bandhan
